We are looking for a Full-Time Assistant Scientist (Hydrometry) on a Permanent basis in Dumfries

We are searching for energetic, innovative self-starters to join our fantastic pool of Assistant Scientists in Hydrometry to support the delivery of high quality Hydrometry data to help Scotland avoid, adapt and act in a changing climate by ensuring that our regulation and flood risk management enable businesses and communities to be resilient to changes in our climate.

Your role will include:

  • Undertaking hydrometric field measurements, plus associated maintenance of infrastructure
    Working mainly outdoors across large and remote parts of Scotland in one of four regional teams within the Hydrometry Unit by measuring rainfall, flows and levels in rivers, lochs and the sea using a wide range of highly specialised equipment.
    You will visit our gauging stations where you will carry out checks and calibrations including flow gaugings in rivers.
    You will carry out repairs and maintenance including strimming, repairing fences and roofs, installation and recalibration of sensors and maintaining outstations

  • Processing and analysis of Data
    You will be required to download data from our stations and then upload this to our hydrometric archive.
    You will do routine analysis and also factual reporting of the data; for example deriving trends and averages.
    You will work with key internal and external stakeholders to help them make best use of the data we gather; for example advising consultants using data for flood defence design. You will describe the parameters and fields in the data, how it is collected and any issues

  • Supporting Hydrology and Flooding
    You will work flexibly and support other business units, including water resources and flood risk management, to deliver across a range of priorities. Examples of activities include: fieldwork and sampling, data entry, basic data handling, routine reporting, GIS analysis, User Acceptance Testing and survey

  • Flood warning
    You will be trained to participate in the operation of flood warning systems as a Flood Warning Duty Officer on a rota basis as required (including occasional out of hours work)

  • Confident working alone, driving long distances and undertaking strenuous work in all weather conditions

  • Proficient at learning to use different types of technical equipment and software packages and have experience working with data

  • You will be enthusiastic, highly numerate, motivated and a team player with great communication skills and a commitment to Health and Safety

  • Adaptable, well organised and a good problem solver with a positive attitude to handling reactive work
