SEPA is Scotland’s principal environmental regulator. But we do much more than solely regulate. Monitoring Scotland’s flood defence system, delivering the government’s Zero Waste Plan and responding to major accidents at industrial sites are just a few of our responsibilities. The Regulatory Reform (Scotland) Act 2014 introduced a general purpose for SEPA to carry out our statutory duties and functions to protect and improve the environment, including managing natural resources, in a sustainable way.

We are looking to recruit a Senior Policy Officer to work in our in our Radioactive Substances Policy and Nuclear Regulation Unit (the RS Unit). The main aim of the RS Unit is to ensure that consistent regulation is applied to those nuclear and complex non-nuclear sites (such as large hospitals, research establishments etc) that keep, use, accumulate or dispose of radioactive substances.

Our collaborative way of working allows us to be at the forefront of advising Government and regulated industry on the policies, principles and means of regulation of radioactive substances. Therefore, in what is a tremendously far-reaching role, you’ll contribute to, and in some areas, lead and coordinate policy development on radioactive substances matters across SEPA. This means you’ll be supporting the implementation of current and future legislation from the European Union, UK Government and the Scottish Parliament. This includes everything from giving advice on legislative issues and disseminating policy to drafting guidelines and providing technical support to our regulatory and science teams. To do it, you’ll work with internal and external stakeholders from across our organisation.

Along with a degree in a relevant environmental science, you’ll need at least 3 years’ experience of working in the nuclear industry, or a related one. A sound knowledge of regulation and legislation governing of radioactive substances is highly desirable– as is an understanding of the technical and scientific work you could be involved with at SEPA. Your communications skills are also important – influencing people and advocating policy decisions is an essential part of this role. This should include experience of liaising with internal and external stakeholders and you’ll be familiar with the processes by which Government policy is developed and implemented.

In return for your commitment, you’ll enjoy benefits including a Local Government pension scheme, flexible working arrangements including location, specialised training and a range of other rewards.
