SEPA is Scotland’s principal environmental regulator. But we do much more than solely regulate. Monitoring Scotland’s flood defence system, delivering the government’s Zero Waste Plan and responding to major accidents at industrial sites are just a few of our responsibilities. The Regulatory Reform (Scotland) Act 2014 introduced a general purpose for SEPA to carry out our statutory duties and functions to protect and improve the environment, including managing natural resources, in a sustainable way.

We are looking to recruit a Specialist II to work in our in our Radioactive Substances Policy and Nuclear Regulation Unit (the RS Unit). The main aim of the RS Unit is to ensure that consistent regulation is applied to those nuclear and complex non-nuclear sites that keep, use, accumulate or dispose of radioactive substances.

As a Specialist at SEPA, you’ll be at the forefront of regulating nuclear and complex non-nuclear sites to ensure best practicable means are used to minimise public exposures to ionising radiation. Your main role will be providing professional and technical advice to support nominated site inspectors in assessing compliance with RSA93 and other relevant legislation at nuclear licensed sites and complex non-nuclear premises e.g. hospitals, universities, offshore premises and sites that are regulated under the Radioactive Contaminated Land (Scotland) Regulations 2009. This involves everything from investigating incidents, taking appropriate action, preparing relevant reports, proposing enforcement action, seeking corrective measures and dealing with the public. Throughout, you’ll also be working closely with external bodies (such as ONR and EA) on matters of mutual interest at nuclear licensed sites in Scotland. Travel across Scotland and to the rest of the UK can be expected.

Along with a first degree in a relevant environmental science, you’ll need extensive professional experience. We’re looking for someone with a strong track record in pollution prevention and control; radiological protection experience would be a distinct advantage You will need to demonstrate sound knowledge of the environmental and technical factors that affect our work, with particular emphasis on the links between policy and science Good knowledge and understanding of radioactive substances legislation is essential. An ability to work with internal and external stakeholders and communicate clearly is also key.

In return for your commitment, you’ll enjoy benefits including a Local Government pension scheme, flexible working arrangements including location, specialised training and a range of other rewards.
